Her father came to Boston from Japan to be a part of the Japanese Consulate in the city. While here, he met Maria's mother, a Japanese-American woman who was an intern at the consulate. The two fell in love, and he decided to accept a permanent position at the consulate. Eventually they had Maria, given an English first name but Japanese middle name. Her parents spoke little Japanese to her, but she could understand her parents fairly well growing up. Instead few phrases or words were introduced in her vocabulary, and she is only now trying to learn the language formally. For most of her life, Maria lived within Boston. Her parents were well off enough that she lived in a town house apartment, but she was by no means part of an upper class society. Rather, her life was rather normal. She would go on the subway, go to school, come home, work, and repeat. Even on the weekends she found herself going along the same roads, following the same routes, getting on the same trains. Ultimately, the city life was not as exciting as it was a turn-off for Maria. She enjoyed trying to get outside of the city as much as possible, going to the coast. A trip to Salem made Maria incredibly interested in the occult. From Ouija boards to tarot cards, Maria hit a stage in her life mostly throughout high school when she found herself interested in the concepts of spirits and the future. Ultimately, her hard work within school paid off as she was accepted to a university outside of Boston, near a small village called Stony Brook. Maria relished in the fact that she was able to get out of the city, pining for the seclusion and peace of Western Mass. The university was outside of Stony Brook, where she decided to move in and get an apartment. Currently in her junior year of college study, Maria is an East Asian Studies major with a minor in Mythology. She is currently writing a research paper on Japanese ghost stories, but finds the rumors of magical properties surrounding Stony Brook to be intriguing. Thus she has quietly focused some of her studies to be on the very place she now lives, analyzing everything and everyone around her, jotting notes in her small notebook she carries with her at all times. Many are surprised that someone as serious and realistic as Maria would be so entranced by magic, but for her it is a search for understanding. So far her life has proved uneventful, normal, and boring, and she cannot help but hope for something to exist to change the tides.
