Being the illegitimate child of a young, irresponsible mother and an older but no less irresponsible father gave Autumn a role in life that most children didn’t have—a bargaining chip. From almost the moment her parents moved in together when her mother was pregnant, their relationship started to deteriorate and at some point, it turned into a game which usually left Autumn having to pick sides or stand by while one parent used her to win an argument with the other. This was the only real attention that Autumn ever received from either of her parents and so, as a child, she relished in the moments she was being favored by either. As she grew older, these moments developed into more complex arguments. They could no longer use the she’ll-grow-up-terribly argument as an excuse because she was already growing up the way she was and so they had to get more creative and incisive with each other, which only served to forge a barrier between Autumn and her parents. Growing up with nothing else, Autumn learned how to get what she wanted by fighting for it and never really being very happy, she was often snide. She was not a particularly loud person, but she was aggressive in her own way and she lashed out whenever she could. Perhaps if her parents had seen this behavior as reaching out to them and thought to fix it, things might have been different. Instead, they continued to use it against each other. They never got married and they never split and Autumn was always left wondering if this was what other people’s homes were like. She never had many friends because she had a hard time convincing her parents to bring her places and it wasn’t until she got to the age where people could drive—or started dating older boys that could—that she really managed to have any sort of social life. For the most part, Autumn became accustomed to spending her time shut up in her room and avoiding her parents. Autumn had never had high expectations for her life, but getting older proved to be better than she’d really expected from anything that simple. Entering high school opened a whole new set of doors—doors that led to drinking and partying and being around people who helped her forget that she even had a home to go to. Four years and at least a dozen inappropriate sexual encounters later, Autumn had a high school diploma. She graduated in the top twenty percent of her class, a feat that none of her friends realized she was managing. She knew, however, that good grades would be the key to being able to move out. Without college and scholarships, there was no way that just turning eighteen would provide the means of freedom she craved. She honestly didn’t care where she went as long as it was far, but in-state. She couldn’t afford out of state tuition and her parents hadn’t expected her to continue education, so they weren’t paying for it. She was accepted to all three school she applied to and so picked the one that was the farthest—in Stony Brook. Moving turned out to be more difficult than she’d expected. Yes, she was away from her parents like she’d always wanted, but Autumn had never really experienced major change and she had trouble adjusting initially to the fact that she was free and on her own and now had to really take care of herself in more ways than just food and sanitation. She has since gotten used to it and does go back to see her parents on Christmas.
