Why they even came here is sometimes a mystery even to the duo. Their dad was on this roll that he’d start his own business and live this great American dream. Of course, it just didn’t work out like that. Instead, they spent most of their lives hopping from home to home, town to town, state to state. Their dad hopped jobs his whole life while their mother did her best to raise her two children right. That was hard when their dad started getting involved in the wrong crew to assure money came into his family.Growing up, Allegra was the outgoing one who trusted a bit too much and loved too hard. It was Eugenio that was the serious and protective of the two. He stayed cautious of the world around them as he learned you can’t even trust the ground beneath your feet to stay the same for long. He did everything in his power to protect Allegra even when she claimed she never needed his help. It was unfortunately Eugene that followed their father’s footsteps. He worked the streets at night, selling alcohol that he stole from his father to underaged drinkers for profit. What money he did make that wasn’t from that came from running tasks for the shady folks that lived on the street. Allegra worried for her brother because he was going down a very bad path. They changed homes again, but that still stayed with him. No matter where they went, he found business which scared her. Would he get involved with all of that next? That wasn’t right, he was just too young. It was several years later that their father was killed in a shooting. It was gang related violence which was suspected would happen to him with all he had involved himself with. That moment scared Eugenio straight and he pulled away from his selling days, but still has the scars of the few drugs he did and the price of the crimes he did. They turned eighteen and their mother tried to convince them to go back to Sicily with her, to return to where her family was. But Allegra didn’t want to go. She knew there was an opportunity coming if they were just patient. Nio agreed to stay in America with her, eventually finding a semi-stable job and “quaint” apartment in the downtown area. They finally settled in this Stony Brook, Pennsylvania. He’s cleaned up since those days, but the memories of his past haunt him and he expresses his displeasure by being overly protective and overbearing on his sister. He never went onto college because he had to hold a job. But he encourages his sister to consider schooling for her art talent, to go somewhere with it. He’d give every minute of his life and every breath of air to give his sister the best opportunities. In the end, he forgets himself and grows bitter as the days pass. Nio will find his own calling one day. Allegra is sure of that, even if he isn’t.
