There were spats of course, like there are with any family, but there was always an undertone of love and goodwill. Her mother was the displaced daughter of a wealthy family, though Hal would not learn of that until later in life. Mae and Naos Suhail eloped at a young age, uniting in a marriage that Mae's family would not abide by, and she was all but struck from the family registry. Naos' family had its own troubles as well, but somehow the mixture of the two created the perfect parents for their children. Halexia was born the third of four children, though her father always teased that you'd never know when another would pop up. Her oldest brother by four years is Nikolai, then Calixta, her elder sister, and Hal's younger brother, Xenos, was born five years after she was. Halexia was born into a lower-middle-class home. Both of her parents worked, so while they were not in school they stayed with their uncle or a babysitter. But they didn't mind, filling the time with mischief and keeping their guardians on their toes. In school Halexia barely scraped by, but not because she was unintelligent or unwilling to learn. She simply didn't do well with deadlines or, frankly, attendance. She did well on tests if she was there for them, but many she missed due to forgetfulness or purposeful negligence. She started skipping classes when she was in middle school, and it only escalated as she got older and romance came into play. Her mother was constantly furious about it, but her father would just laugh it off. 'She's smart, she knows it. Don't worry so much.' She had many relationships while she was in high school, some exclusive, some not. It wasn't that she 'cheated,' persay, not in the traditional sense of the word. She doesn't do it to hurt people, she just genuinely doesn't understand the concept of commitment. She doesn't understand why she can only love one person. But that's a whole different mystery. Alas, her mother's fears about college attendance proved true - Halexia never applied, as further schooling didn't hold much interest for her after just barely graduating high school. Her siblings weren't all like her, with Nikolai in his first year of graduate school to become a pediatrician and Calixta at Harvard. But no, a luxurious life never was one to fit into her plans. So, upon graduating, she moved away from home both to satisfy her own need for adventure and to help take the financial strain off of her parents, not that they'd ever mention that to her. And so she finds herself in Stony Brook, drawn by the odd rumors of fate and the curious potential it might hold.
