OTHER INFORMATION
HISTORY:
His beginning: The sterile environment of a hospital is commonly the first location a child is surrounded by at the beginning of their life and the same is true for John Doe, with one minor exception: John’s life didn’t begin until he was (estimated to be) seven years old. As it was told to him: A small charter plane crashed in the city of Bend, Oregon. Of the five passengers listed on the flight’s roster, all were accounted for – three dead, one in a coma, one in a crazed state of mute shock…and then John – unaccounted for, unlisted and unknown. After several visits with the hospital psychologist, it was determined John had developed retrograde amnesia and would most likely not regain memories of what happened before the crash. At that point with no known home or guardians to contact about the boy, the hospital released John to the foster system.
His childhood: Most children in his first foster family knew they had been given up, left for a better chance at life or simply placed there due to a parent’s stupidity, but John couldn’t claim any of these reasons as his own. There were no birth records to hand over to possible adopters, no childhood photos, relics from his past; for all they knew he had fallen from an alien spaceship. As a child he was thoughtful, considering the possibilities of outlandish stories such as UFOs and as he grew, so did his curiosity: Why hadn’t he been listed on the flight? Who were his parents? Spies, secret servicemen, people no one cared about? With the majority of his days spent reflecting and creating wild stories of who he could have been, many foster parents thought him in need of medication, too energetic, or not demure enough to keep in their company – so he began being passed around, home to home, city to city, eventually passing through eight counties before (what the state deemed) his tenth birthday.
The beginning of a new life: By his eleventh birthday, John had spent three months in a group home and feeling he had dealt with more than he felt necessary from the system, decided it would in his best interest to try and make a life for himself without the “help” of the state. With only a pack of clothes, food, and a bottle of water, John left his group home, running in a straight line without any sleep for fifty hours, hoping that would put enough distance between himself and any who were asked to look for him. Two weeks later he had already learned how to cause distractions and steal when necessary, thinking himself a modern-day Robin Hood. One day, while continuing on his journey through the states, a teenage girl caught up to him after he had stolen a few pieces of food from a grocery store. She introduced herself as Lacey and said she had been watching him for a few days. Just as John was about to run, she told him she knew who he was and could help. Whether it was interest, exhaustion, or the fact a pretty fifteen-year-old was talking to him, he decided to cautiously follow her back to what she called “our hideout.”
What made him change: After the first meeting, John decided to stay with the wandering group misfits known as The Vault Hunters. All were kids like himself -runaways, determined to make a family for themselves instead of being shipped around to one. For the first year with the gang, John stayed by Lacey’s side through day and night as she taught him all she knew about thieving and keeping the gang safe. Though embarrassed when any called him out on his infatuation, he’d smile and joking tell them he was by her side to protect her (though, being only twelve and nearly a foot shorter than her made that a plain lie). Sadly, there came a day when the reality of how false his claim was changed his life. Always going out in pairs for safety’s sake, Lacey took John with her for a late-night food grab. When three men began following them, the duo did all in their power to shake the perverts to no avail. After being knocked out by one of the men, John woke to see Lacey had been raped, beaten and left to die. He ran back to the hideout and told the leader what had happened, but cops had surrounded Lacey’s body by the time the gang returned and nothing further could be done. From that point on, John stopped smiling as much, taking full blame for her death, and became determined to not allow anyone to hurt his “family” again.
Currently: For years after Lacey’s death, John worked diligently at growing his body in strength and size, working out daily and watching the leader of their pack with special care. By the time he was sixteen John had seen many people come and go, some with promise of a better future, others shunned due to betrayal. All the while, he held fast to his new determination and careful nature, eventually proving himself resourceful enough to have as third in command. However, by his twenty-second year there were too many finding their way to the Vault Hunters so the three in command decided to disband into separate groups. With protection for his group as his primary focus, John eventually led them to Stony Brook, Masschusetts where he’s been the authority figure of the Vault Hunters for the past two years.
