The works of A.A. Milne and the tales of Christopher Robin, Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, the elegant and refined world of Pride and Prejudice, and Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist, to start with. Born an only child to a single mother, books were his constant companion though childhood, adolescence, and onward. Living in the English countryside was a wonderful place to grow up, and Celino has memories of spending much of his time outdoors. With a book, of course, but there was fun in looking for a unique place to read it in, and still manage to get home by 7. The local library was more than enough to satiate his needs. A few years after Celino had started public schooling- he was around 12, he and his mother moved into a nearby city. Switching schools was easy, in theory. There were only forms that needed to be filled out and completed, and then he would just attend class like always, come home, and repeat. With his mother’s new job, Celino became a latchkey kid, a shiny copper key on a chain around his neck. Though shy still, he embraced the “responsibility”, and would pretend to be an adult, making his mother some tea just because he came home first, welcoming her home quietly, as soon as she got through the door. The teenage years were…not quite as easy. A bit of bullying started- not many of the boys had started their growth spurt, so it wasn’t because he was tiny and thus easy to loom over and dominate. It was more or less due to a habit of being the teacher’s obvious favorite, as well as being incredibly withdrawn from the other children, nose in a book even during class. (He had cried once when it was taken away- and nobody ever forgot that.) It went on for a few years, until sixteen approached. Like a weed, Celino grew and grew and grew- he was nearly six-foot-six when he graduated school. While the harassment stopped, the damage was done. Stuttering to the point that it hindered communication. Sure, some girls stutter to be bashful, sure , when some people are embarrassed they stutter a little, a cute blush. It’s a bit annoying when it’s always there- pauses are littered in his speech as well. Because of this, Celino made the decision to study linguistics. Maybe English simply was not for him anymore- or even he could try to repair himself, do something about it by learning the minute aspects to how language functioned. The move to Stony Brook, Massachusetts was accompanied by a job at the local library and a keen interest in living by himself. Here, he would study linguistics and languages, as well as dabble in history. He would save up money, and eventually attend a community college. Get a degree maybe- and take care of his mother once he got a well-paying job. Though, he was much more relieved to be away from his old city and the memories that it contained. He was much more comfortable far, far away from it. Celino often writes letters to his mother. A year or so after his move to the town, he came across a stray dog, and with much consideration, took it in. The dog turned out to be male, and it’s sweet temperament- although often a bit more boisterous than Celino would have preferred- gets Celino out of his house much more often than he was initially comfortable with. In regards to the soulmate folklore- Celino considers it just that, when he came across it in an old book dictating the town history. He finds it charming, and occasionally spends some time wondering where his went.
