She never really knew her mother as she died long ago. The only thing she knew was that not long after she was born, her Mom died in a fire. She was at work. She had been a secretary in a small law office. She was working late one night and was the only person in the building when it caught on fire. She had been trapped inside. By the time the rescue workers arrived she was already dead. A year or so later Matt's father, Mark, got remarried and then Matt had a baby sister named Bianca. Matt was never very close to her step-mother or her half-sister, but she was very close to her dad. Her father took her out fishing and taught her how to fix cars. Considering the fact that her father was a mechanic, Matt learned a lot about cars from a very early age. Then as she grew she became more curious about her mother, her biological mother. Her maternal grandparents lived on the other side of the country, in Pennsylvania, so she didn't get to see them very often. One summer she spent a few weeks there when she was fourteen. That was when she found her mother's book of shadows and discovered that her mother was a wiccan. She'd been snooping through boxes of her mother's things up in her grandparent's attic when she came across it. She read through the entire book while she was there, but she didn't dare take it with her. She knew her father still got upset whenever she asked questions about her mom so she wasn't sure how he'd react if he knew she had her mother's book of shadows. Instead, she waited until she got home to her laptop and then recreated the book on her computer (her computer chip of shadows as she calls it). With her eidetic memory it wasn't hard, it was more time consuming than anything as she typed everything into the computer. She also searched as much as she could about witchcraft on the internet. While she knew when she began that a lot of the stuff she'd probably find would be fake, she searched for stuff that seemed to have information matching what she'd seen. Most of the first year after she found the book was spent analyzing the spells and researching potion ingredients, trying to figure out how all of it worked from a scientific standpoint. While Matt never really believed magic was real, there was still a part of her that always wished that it was. She thought most religions were a waste of time, but still liked to believe that there was some greater purpose for everything. She liked to believe in fate and destiny, but there was always a part of her that couldn't help doubting all of it. When she was a senior in high school, her dad was transferred for work. He still worked for the same company, but they had to move from California to Boston, Massachusetts. Matt was very upset having to leave all of her friends behind for her last year of high school, but she managed to get through it. She went to a small technical school for computer repair before moving to Stony Brook to open a computer store that also offers repair services.
